Panda's and Poses

A few sketches from my Final Year Project of the main character and a baby Panda.

The short was that a character would interact with a large present box that they come across while walking by and inside, when the character finally opens it, is a baby Panda.

These sketches are of various possible poses that could be used in the short. To find out if the poses would be dramatic enough I sketched out poses in silhouette to see if they could register with the audience, as they would be bold and striking.

Piggy rough designs and 3D models

Some Pre-production work from my 'Piggy' Project.

I did some drawings in rough then from them i created 3D models of the 'Piggy' character, trying to keep as close to the designs as possible.

Clock - Mechanical Time

Here are a few screenshots of various development stages from a project I worked on with the brief that I was to create an interesting looking clock, which has some kind of unique mechanism running it.

I would also need to mix and blend some 2D elements to the animation.

I started off using basic shapes and roughly layed out my 'chain reaction' mechanism. I would later come back to make detailed models and add various textures to make them look like toy like objects.

Objects included were, toy cars, finger skateboard, mini see-saws, various toys, a jukebox and domino's.

Phone video messages

This character design was to be implemented for use on a mobile phone when a caller rings or if the caller was busy.

I kept the model simple and sub divided it so that it was more rounder and smoother thus creating a more squishy and squashy looking character.

Character design sketches

These are some rough sketch work I produced while I was developing ideas for my final Year Project at University.

The final look and design I went for was a young trendy male.

I wanted it to be quite simple and have bold features for the face so that viewers can see the expressions that the character would be making when interacting with a box.

Character animation - Piggy

These are storyboards that were later made into a short animatic for a character animation project at university.

The brief was I had to produce a character and animate a 30 second short for a video ringtone. With a few different genres of music clips to choose from i decided to sample one that sounded very country/western and from that i designed the 'Piggy' character, which I later developed into a piggy bank to add character.

The story is that the Piggy trips over and loses its coin and gives chase. It finally corner it but the coin ends up rebounding off a rock and is lodged up its nose. The poor Piggy finally sneezes it out and just as he passes out from exhaustion, the coin bounces back in.

Sketches of Ayumi Hamasaki

Some face sketches of Ayumi Hamasaki, a very popular J-pop singer. She is known to have very large, beautiful eyes so i tried to focus on them and make them the focus point in the sketches.

The colour side profile of her was made using 'Flash MX' using different whole coloured shapes to give a vector like look to the image.

sketches of buildings and architecture

Here are a few sketches of some buildings and some scenery which was part of some research and development work for a project about a urban city in a made up video game.

Some of the sketches are from buildings in Hong Kong and Japan.

Character designs - Chibi style

These designs are of stylised characters that was for a made up video game.

Since the brief was set that i had to design a video games cover i decided to look into different video games and concluded that the it was best for the designs to be simple, bold and would stand out.

The style that i went for was a 'Chibi' style in that the characters were stylised in a way that made them look cartoon like and almost baby like. Using simpler shapes would also mean that, in a 3D aspect, the characters would be easier to model and look bold and colourful when completed.
